About the PNA
Since it was established in 1888, the Prouts Neck Association (PNA) has played an integral role in the stewardship of Prouts Neck and the natural environment of this unique coastal Maine community. The PNA is a nonprofit charitable organization that is supported by voluntary donations from families in the Prouts Neck community.
Included in the original mission statement of the PNA are provisions to "obtain proper care and maintenance of roads," to "preserve the trees and shrubbery from injury and destruction," to "provide an authoritative means of communicating with the officers of the town of Scarborough," and "generally to take all feasible measures for the access to and the improvement of Prouts Neck."
When the Prouts Neck Improvement Association was formed in 2017 and assumed responsibility for roads, security, trash removal, and other homeowner association items, the PNA adopted this revised mission: "To sustain Prouts Neck as a place of natural beauty, that is resilient in the face of change, and inspires families in every generation to invest in its future."
The PNA carries out this mission through educational programs, creative partnerships, and measures that conserve open space and natural habitats. Current priorities include:
- Environmental Protection: Managing the Prouts Neck Sanctuary, which is owned by the PNA; commissioning a study to improve the management of Massacre Pond; and collaborating with the PNIA to protect the oceanside Marginal Way, also known as the Cliff Walk.
- Supporting the Charles E. Thomas Memorial Library, which is owned by the PNA and offers a wide selection of books, community programs, and reading rooms.
- Providing a mail kiosk where Prouts Neck residents can pick up mail and packages.
- Community Support: Providing financial grants to nonprofit organizations in Scarborough and the Portland area that serve our neighboring communities.
